Producer Highlight
Champagne Martial-Couvreur: The Couvreur family have been living in Rilly-La-Montagne, a village of the ‘Grande Montagne de Reims’, since the 17th Century. At the start of the 20th Century, Léon Couvreur was selling ‘Ordinary wine from the Champagne region’, it was only after World War 2 that his son, Martial, decided to go into Champagne production and Champagne Martial-Couvreur was born. From 1984, it was Martial’s son, Christian, who developed the Martial-Couvreur brand into what it is today. The business is still family run and still based in Rilly-La-Montagne, Premier Cru of the ‘Grande Montagne de Reims’. After harvest, the grapes are made into wine by one of the best cooperatives in France. The champagne then follows a very traditional route; aging, riddling and bottling all happen in the Martial-Couvreur wine cellars. Martial Couvreur is truly a family brand whose knowledge and ‘savoir-faire’ have been passed on from generation to generation.
About Us
Over a long history of importing wines and spirits, Portal, Dingwall and Norris have built up decades of experience, contending with two world wars and the great depression along the way. We started in 1830 as wine and spirit merchants, concentrated solely on rum for a while as part of United Rum Merchants, got folded into not one, not two but three large alliances one after the other before being reclaimed as a wine business. We have now gone full circle and, once again, have a full range of wine and spirits. We love finding amazing independent producers and promoting new and exciting items to our customers. All new products are tasted before they come in to ensure continued quality for all our clients. We hold tastings in our shop and co-host events with bars and restaurants we supply, we also hold tastings with groups like the University of the 3rd Age, membership clubs and do private events on request.
